In part 2 of the Speaking test, you are required to speak continuously for 2 minutes. This is quite a challenge for many students as they often find themselves not having enough ideas to continue talking. A good strategy for this part would be to try to add as much detail as possible into your answer.
Let’s look at an example. This is a topic you might get:
Describe a restaurant you like
You should say:
where it is
how often you go there
what food it has
and explain why you like it
Ok, now let’s discuss how we should answer this question.
First, for the first sub-question, regarding where the restaurant is, don’t just say where it is. You need to describe the location more thoroughly. Ask yourself: Is the place near your home? How long does it take to get there? Is the restaurant on a busy/crowded street? Is the restaurant near any special attractions?
This is how I would answer:
“Well, I would like to talk about one of my favourite restaurants. It is called Botanica Restaurant. It is located in a road called Burgess Road in Southampton, which is quite close to where I’m living at the moment. Normally, it takes me only around 7 minutes to drive to the restaurant. The restaurant is right next to West Quay, the main shopping centre of the city, so the street is a little bit crowded.” (Note that you don’t have to tell the truth, just say something that comes across your mind.)
Let’s move on to the second sub-question. How often do you go there? Well, don’t just say “I go there twice a week”. Give more detail. Why do you go there regularly? Do you go there for lunch or for dinner? Do you go there any day or just in the weekends? Who’s with you?
This is my answer:
“I would say that I go to Botanica Restaurant twice every week. The reason is that I’m very bad at cooking, and eating out seems like a good option for me. Most of the time, I go there in the weekends to have dinner, sometimes with my co-workers, sometimes with my family. My wife also loves this restaurant!”
Now you know how to give more detail to your speech, try to answer the last two sub-questions by yourself. You can comment your answers in this post so I can have a look.
